Indian Air Force Receives 3-D Surveillance Radar System

Manufactured by Bharat Electronics Limited, a Government of India undertaking, the first of the three-dimensional Surveillance Radar System, named ‘Rohini’ was handed over to the Indian Air Force, by the company Chairman, V.V.R.Sastry, who gave the ceremonial key to the Chief of Air Force, Air Chief Marshal F.H.Major at a function in Ghaziabad on 6th August’08.

The state-of-the-art multifunctional medium range surveillance radar is mounted on a fortified heavy-duty truck for easy transportation of the Radar System to the war front. The carrier truck named ‘Tetra’ has been built by another government undertaking Bharat Earth Movers Limited.

Developed by Bangalore based Defence Research and Development Organisation, Rohini is capable of handling multiple targets simultaneously, calculating precisely the height at which the projectiles are flying.

Operating in a range of 170km and tracking at an altitude up to 15km, the radar can detect multiple targets like fighter jets and missiles speeding at over 3000km per hour i.e. Mach-3.

The radar also incorporates many counter measure features like frequency agility and jammer analysis. It can also distinguish between friendly and hostile aircrafts.
