After watching a video of Indian children working in a New Delhi sweatshop, Gap’s President Marka Hansen said that it was very disturbing. Hansen added that she was deeply upset and angry with the vendor and the subcontractor that made the decision to use child labor. Gap’s president blames the one of its vendors for a subcontract that was unauthorized.
She states: “In 2006, Gap Inc. ceased business with 23 factories due to code violations. We have 90 people located around the world whose job is to ensure compliance with our Code of Vendor Conduct.”
These children brought into the sweatshops were sold by their parents according to the interview. They were making blouses that were hand-stitched for the Gap Kids stores for both the United States and Europe according to The Observer. On the market, it’s reported that they would go for forty dollars a piece.
It’s not the only time that Gap has been criticized. They have been criticized for practices similar back in 2003. It was uncovered by a BBC documentary that young girls in a factory at Cambodia were doing the same thing.
Gap also owns Banana Republic and Old Navy.
