Indian Gynecologist Has License Suspended After BBC Report

During a BBC report into female feticide, Dr. Mangala Telang was filmed offering an illegal ultrasound scan. But she has denied any allegations of wrongdoing. While the allegations against Dr. Telang are investigated, two of her Delhi clinics have been shut down by health officials.

Her license is suspended under the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques act.

The investigation was launched by BBC Asian Network. This was to test reports of a number of British Indians traveling to India to have these selective abortions. While it’s illegal to offer these scans in the country, the law is blown off on a regular basis.

In the film, Dr. Telang was caught agreeing to perform the scan.

This selection of gender is illegal in both the UK and India. It’s estimated that over the past twenty-five years that seven million girls have gone missing. It is a possible most were aborted for being the wrong “gender.” This illegal practice is wide spread throughout some parts of India.

As a result, the ratio of males to females is skewed. There is a lot of prejudice present as female children are deemed inferior to male children. While the laws to stop female feticide are strict in India, it’s rare for perpetrators to be prosecuted.
