Indian Home Minister arriving Jammu today to review the security situation

 

Jammu, February 17 (Scoop News) – Indian Home Minister P Chidambaram is arriving Jammu today to chair a high-level meeting  to review the security situation,discuss amnesty policy and plans of modernisation of the police force.

Offical sources said that Indian home minister will chair the Unified Command meeting which will be attended by top brass of all security agencies and civil administration besides J&K Chief Minister. Sources said that the Unified Command’s meeting would discuss contours of the "cross-border surrender policy" after taking into consideration the militants in PoK camps, latest intelligence inputs, screening setup and modalities of surrender.

 

It may be mentioned here that the Home Minister’s visit assumed significance as it comes few days after he accepted the idea mooted by J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to give amnesty to Kashmiri youths, held up in PoK, if they wish to return, giving up the gun.

Meanwhile army returns de-mined land to civilians at LoC in Jammu. Lauding the role of the Army the Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand said, “we are proud of our Army for fighting  and  safeguarding the borders of the country”.   

Speaking at a joint function of army and Civil Administration in the border area of Chaperial Shamwan, Akhnoor of Jammu district yesterday, Tara Chand also appreciated the Army’s Sadbhawana programme for the  development  and welfare of various sections of the society especially living in Border areas of the state .

The function was organized to handover 717 kanals and 19 Marlas of demined land in border village of Chaprian Shamwan to the local population for reviving agriculture activities. The work for demining the remaining land will be speeded  up.

Tara Chand expressed gratitude to the Army for fulfilling the demand of the local people to clear 717 Kanals and 19 Marlas  of land from mines, adding that the  people of border areas have suffered a lot during the period the land remained under the use of army, particularly when these people have no source of income except the farming to earn their livelihood. He hoped that remaining land of 471 acres will also be got demined at an earliest.

 On the occasion, Maj General K Majundar, GOC 10 Infantry Division, informed the Dy CM that jawans have carried out the demining process even  in the harshest weather conditions with the cooperation of the people  and assured that the men in uniform will ensure the security of the country’s frontiers and will also continue to assist the people in the development of the area. He assured the Dy Chief Minister and villagers that demining of  rest of the  land will be carried urgently and will be handed over  to the villagers before July next.
