Leh/Ladakh,October 30 (Scoop News) -The Union Home Minister, P. Chidambaram visited the severely flood hit village of Saboo today and had a on spot appraisal of flood devastation that has claimed hundreds of lives besides damaging huge public properties like agriculture land, irrigation canal, roads, bridges and plantations.
The J&K Tourism Minister, Nawang Rigzin Jora and the Chief Executive Councilor, Leh Hill Council, Rigzin Spalbar accompanied the Home Minister and they briefed him about the magnitude of cloudburst and extent of the damages.
At Saboo, Chidambaram inaugurated a newly constructed 2-room set of a flood victim which was constructed by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). The CII head Mrs, Charu Mathur told to the Home Minister that CII will construct a total of 13 houses in Saboo village for those families whose houses were completely washed away by the flash flood in August. She further said that CII will construct 10 such houses at Solar Colony also at a cost of Rs: 5 lakh each.
The Home Minister also visited the upcoming Solar Colony at Choglamsar where 157 houses under Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund and equal number of Pre-fab one room set are coming up for the flood hit people.
Briefing the implementation of relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction measures, the Deputy Commissioner Sanjiv Verma said that out of Rs 2.00 lacs each for fully damaged houses sanctioned under Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund,(PMNRF), Rs: 1.00 lac each so far received by 665 families. Likewise, 571 families out of 708, whose house were partially damaged, they also received Rs: 50,000/- as first installment out of the sanctioned Rs: 1.00 lac each family. It was further disclosed that 450 one-room tenements to be constructed by HPL while as 100 one-room tenements to be constructed by NMBA.
Interacting with the flood victims at Solar Colony, Chidambaram assured that the Center and State Governments would extend all out supports and assistance to rehabilitate them in a proper way and advised the people to face the challenges with courage till the things are suitably settled.
At Solar Colony, the flood hit people demanded for early release of next installment of relief ex-gratia, enhancement of ex-gratia in the wake of high cost construction materials in Ladakh and providing subsidized loan for establishing income generating units for those people whose shops, taxis, trucks were lost in the flood.
The Principal Secretary Planning, Mr, Khurshid Ahmad Ganai who was also accompanying the Home Minister said that a team of members from ST/SC, bankers and Women Development Corporation will soon visit Leh to scrutinize the genuine flood hit persons for providing them loans and subsidized financial assistance to re-establish their income generating units.
MLC, Norbu Gyalson, Director General Police, Kuldeep Khuda, SSP Leh Bin Sen Tuti, Councilor Tsering Sonam and district officers were accompanied the Home Minister.
Later, in the evening, the Union Home Minister had a meeting with the newly elected members of Ladakh Autonomous Hill development Council, Leh and the officers of the district administration.
The Deputy Commissioner gave a power point presentation highlighting the extent of damages by flood and progress of rehabilitation and reconstruction measures.
