The Chief Executive Councilor, LAHDC, Leh, Chering Dorje flagged off the Indian Ice Hockey team at Bakula Airport, here on Tuesday to participate in the IIHF Challenge Cup of ASIA at Abu Dhabi, Dubai.
The Deputy Commissioner, Leh Ajeet Kumar Sahu, Vice President of Ladakh Winter Sports Club, officials of District Youth Welfare and Sports Department, besides a large number of people were also present to wish good luck and see off the team at the Airport.
Speaking to media-persons at the Airport, Dorje said it was a proud moment for Ladakh that ice hockey players from the region will represent the nation at the international event. He hoped that the team will perform with distinction and will prove good ambassadors of the country as well as
Mr. Dorje also praised Ladakh Winter Sports Club for promoting winter games in the region and grooming Ladakhi sportsmen for international competition. The CEC also thanked the team from Canadian High Commission, which has visited Ladakh frequently and played matches here, thus giving good exposure to the local players.
Keeping in view the tremendous potential of winter games in Ladakh, measures have been initiated for creation of an all-weather Ice Hockey Stadium of international standard at Leh.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sahu said it was a great moment for players of Ladakh to represent the nation at such a big event. He hoped that the team would perform well, adding Ladakh also had vast potential in other traditional sports such as polo and archery. To encourage and promote games in Ladakh, a District Olympic Association was recently formed with a 15-year road map for promotion of games in the region, he added.
