Jammu, September 9 (Vijay Kumar) A 34 year old son of the soil Major Akash Singh attained martyrdom after killing two militants at the time of preventing an infiltration bid by a group of heavily armed militants from across the line fo control in Mendhar sector of Poonch district on wednesday.
According to a News Agency Kashmmir Independent Press (KIP) quoating defence PRO said, " the Indian Army on wednesday thwarted an infiltration bid in Sunegali area of Mendhar when a group of 3 – 4 terrorists attempted to cross over the LC towards the Indian side in the hours of darkness. "In the ensuing battle two terrorists were killed and the Army has suffered one officer casualty Major Akash Singh, age 34 years of 5 MARATHA LIGHT INFANTRY gallantly laid down his life fighting the terrorists".
The martyred officer an alumini of OTA Chennai was commissioned into 5 MARATHA LIGHT INFANTRY on 04 Sep 99 and has rendered 10 years of meritorious service in the Army.defence PRO said.
In his distinguished career the officer served in the counter insurgency areas of J&K and the North East. The officer is survived by his wife Mrs Deepti Samyal and two children.
Major Akash Singh, a resident of Shiv Nagar in Jammu had left home on August 31. He is survived by his wife, 2-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter.
Meanwhile, bodies of the two militants have been recovered and search operations to look for more militants hiding in the area of the encounter were still going on at the time of filing this report.
