Though ironical, yet it may be true.
The political rumors in the Country were rife only a couple of days back that Prime Minister, Dr.Manmohan Singh is preparing to put in his papers consequent to his Government’s inability to see the Nuclear Deal through. With the Left Parties taking an equally a tough position that they would withdraw support if the deal was operationalized and the UPA allies speaking in different voices, there was a stalemate.
It is in this scenario, the news that Inflation has touched the double-digit figure came in a blessing in disguise for both the Parties to water down their stand.
Recalling the Prime Minister’s speech some time back that his Government was not a ‘single issue’ Government, obviously referring to the Nuclear Deal, Mr.Prakash Karat wanted Dr.Manomohan Singh and his colleagues, especially, the Finance Minister, Mr.P.Chidambaram to tackle the menace of Inflation which if not controlled, it would eventually control them.
Being singled out by all and sundry that he was responsible for the current economic situation, Dr.Manmohan Singh had no other alternative except to control his appetite for a confrontation with the Left on the Nuclear Deal and devote his attention on tackling the price rise.
In the process, nobody seems to be in a mood to listen to the long-term advantages of the Nuclear-deal as an alternative to the oil-Dependant economy seems to have been lost.
After all politics is the art of looking for shorter gains over long-term advantages.
