Inkling Into the Demands for New States if Gorkhaland is Created

I have been maintaining all along that creating a miniature state of Gorkhaland would open ‘Pandora’s box’ and various ethnic and other aspirants for new states would put the country into turmoil of militancy to achieve their goals.

A small preliminary list of existing aspirants for new states is given below for reader’s ready reference.

Bodoland (Assam), Bundelkhand (Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh), Central Travancore (Kerala), Gondwana (norhtern Deccan Plateu), Harit Pradesh (Uttar Pradesh), Kamtapur (West Bengal), Karbi Anglong (Assam), Kodagu (Karnataka), Mahakoshal (Madhya Pradesh), Mithila (Bihar), Purbanchal (Uttar Pradesh), Royalaseema (Andhra Pradesh), Telengana (Andhra Pradesh), Vidarbha (Maharastra), Vidyachal (Madhya Pradesh), Ladakh (Kashmir), Panun Kashmir(Kashmir), Greater Kochbihar(Bengal).

In fact the above list is not exhaustive. Apart from demands for three states in Bengal, Jharkhandis are demanding three districts of Bengal, Viz, West Midnapore, Bankura, Purulia. So apart from demands of new states, a large number of demands for re-organizing the boundaries of existing states would also come up. Then if once the existing demands were met, a large number of new demands would also arise making an endless stream of states which would even be smaller than a district at present.

The administrative fall out of such large number of tiny states would be obvious. The country would be a bundle of tiny states where most of the revenues would be eaten up by bureaucratic set ups; interstate trade would suffer because of large number of check points; thugs and criminals would easily sneak into neighborhood states after committing crimes. Further such tiny states would be happy moving and hiding places for terrorist.

The most severe after effect would be availability of poor revenues for development as most of the revenues would be eaten up by large bureaucratic set up like High Courts, Governors, Police administration, new assembly houses, ministers, MLAs so on and so forth.

In short, it will be the beginning of disintegration of India, which was unified by Sardar Ballabh Bhai Patel by integrating 600 tiny states into India, just after independence.
