Srinagar, March 8 (Scoop News) – Week long International Women’s day celebrations today commenced at the University of Kashmir’s Gandhi Bhawan organized by the Department of Students Welfare in collaboration with the Women’s Study Centre and the Directorate of Information Technology & Support System (IT&SS).
The Dean Academic Affairs, Prof. A R Yousuf who was the Chief Guest for the inaugural session spoke of the importance of women in the fabric of the society. “Unless the position of women in the society is not understood, we cannot move ahead” he said emphasizing on the need to provide equal rights and offer equal opportunities to women. “Islam has elevated the rights of women. Men and women need to work together for the betterment of the society” he added.
Dean Students Welfare and Director, Women’s Studies Centre, Prof. (s.) Nilofar Khan while welcoming the guests to the session highlighted the activities undertaken by the Women’s Studies Centre in educating the woman of today and generating awareness in the society about their role in building the society. “Education is one of the primary means to empower women” she asserted.
A symposium on ‘the changing role of women’ and a poster competition on the same theme were also held as part of the celebrations wherein students from various colleges, departments and faculties of the university showcased their talent. Naveed Trumboo bagged the first position while Khazin Muneer Khan and Naheed Iqbal were adjudged 2nd and 3rd positions respectively. Sheikh Rizwan Javed and Sehar Nazir won the 1st and 2nd consolation prizes respectively. Mudasir Gul, Shifa ul Hamid and Zahoor ud din Lone bagged the 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions in the poster competition. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd consolation prizes were adjudged to Khazin Muneer Khan, Nadeem Mushtaq and Hilal Ahmad Khan respectively.
As part of a program to empower non – teaching female faculty of the university, Prof. Nilofar Khan also inaugurated a 5 – day IT training program organized in collaboration with Directorate of IT&SS of the University. “After receiving an overwhelming response for the program, a long term program to impart IT skills to the non teaching female staff of the University will be designed” she said. In the initial phase, 25 women have been selected to undergo this training.
The proceedings of the function were conducted by the cultural officer, Shahid Ali Khan who also delivered the vote of thanks.
The valedictory function shall be held on the 12th of March to culminate the celebrations.
