Britain has been invaded many times. Nobody knows who the original inhabitants were, but the earliest known invasion is thought to have been by a dark-haired race of people called the Iberians, who came from the western Mediterranean..
The next invaders, whom we know a little more about, were the Britons, again dark-haired and speaking a language called Celtic. They have given their name to the whole island of Britain, and their language is still spoken in Wales.Another Celtic-speaking race with fair or redish hair settled in Scotland, and their language too is still spoken by a few Scots.
After the Romans had conquered the Celts, making Britain a Roman province and bringing with them the Latin language and an advanced civilisation, the country was overrun by Germanic tribes, the Angels, Saxons and Jutes. The language they spoke became our modern English, and the modern name ”England” was at first ‘Angel-land’
Two more in vasions remained to complete the foundations of modern Britian. The Danes occupied the north-eastern part of England, and later the French-speaking Normans under William the Conqueror conquered the whole of it, bringing great administrative progress and an upper social classd which still exists. One of william’s decendants is Queen Elizabeth 11.
