On the occasion of the World Population Day 11 July 2009, UN Secretary-General Ban ki-Moon urges nations to invest well in women and girls in order to meet the Millennium Development Goals.
“Investing in girls’ education delivers well-known returns. When girls are educated, they are more likely to earn higher wages and obtain better jobs, to have fewer and healthier children and to enjoy safer childbirth” states the Secretary-General in his message delivered today.
Referring to the importance of investing in women and girls, he points out to the possibility of increase of productivity. He also reminds the world that more investment in women also means improvement in their reproductive health, saving millions of lives.
In his message, the Secretary-General finally urges nations’ decision-makers to protect women’s ability to earn income, keep their daughters in school, and obtain reproductive health information and services, including voluntary family planning.
