According to World Association of Newspapers (WAN), 95 journalists and media workers were killed worldwid when they were engaged in professional duties in 2007.
Iraq tops the list in the killings with 45 , with Somalia occupying the second place with a tally of 8. Six Journalists in Sri Lanka and five in Pakistan respectively were the casualities during the same period.
According to Mr.Timothy Balding, Chief Executive Officer of WAN, the situation in Iraq is worrying and Journalists engaged in investigative work tracking organised crime, drugtrafficking and other offeces like corruption are also targets of these killers. In most of the cases, the killers are not brought to books at all, leave alone justice.
