Ahmadinejad had remained defiant over the threat of sanctions from the UN.
“If they want to continue with that path of sanctions, we will not be harmed. They can issue resolutions for 100 years,” the leader said in a recent interview. This came after a report that was released by the United Nations that Iran’s nuclear program was more transparent and clear. However, the report did not give the assurances of credibility that Iran was not actually constructing a nuclear bomb.
However, Iran insists that the program is focused towards generating electricity and not used to make weapons.
United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said that this would call forth a third set of sanctions over Iran’s nuclear program. Rice said that the report from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) showing Iran’s efforts to stop the program was not enough. She gave the suggestion that the United States should push the UN to take more action.
The United Nations Security Council had met in Washington to talk about the next step. Currently, the UN Security Council is split over Kosovo’s independence.
Ahmadinejad said that the report was a victory.
“I congratulate your eminence and the Iranian people on the historic victory of Iran in its greatest confrontation with the oppressive powers since the Islamic revolution,” he had said to the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
While Iran insists it is not building a nuclear warhead, it is defiant over ending its nuclear program.
There is a high chance that this will be a possible debate topic for both the Democrats and Republicans.
