NEW YORK, NY—Iran sees itself as the catalyst for a new world order. In a news briefing, the Iranian President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, said “Iran and China are two great countries which cradle human civilization and they can have a role in the establishment of a just and humane new world order”.
He added “The order and the system dominating the world at present [are] worn-out and rotten and its unfair nature has been unveiled to all”. “Under the present conditions, the world needs a humane and fair new order and Iran and China can have fruitful cooperation in the interest of humanity to define and establish this order,” said Ahmadinejad.
In his speech, the Iranian President stressed increasing cooperation between Iran and China in order to bring about both countries’ vision of the new world order.
In Ahmadinejad’s view, the new world order to be established by Iran and China is aimed at replacing the current discriminatory geopolitical equilibrium with one based on justice and rule of law.
In the wake of the unrest in the Middle East, several Iranian politicians, including the Iran’s Supreme Leader, have made public statements that sought to establish a nexus between the 1979 Islamic revolution and the current cries for democracy in the Arab world.
“The Iranian nation has succeeded in growing and displaying a model and paradigm of Islamic governance to the world…,” said Vice-Chairman of the parliament’s Judicial Commission, Moussa Qazanfarabadi.
Iran believes that the popular uprising in the Arab world is in response to a popular demand for an Islamic form of government similar to that which currently is in place in the Islamic Republic.
So much of Iran’s foreign policy is predicated on exporting its brand of Islamic government to its Arabneighbors, including Saudi Arabia whose Royal Family Iranian clerics view as being a proxy for the West.
In order to bring about its vision of the new world order, Iran has embarked on a series of regional and international alliances which include close cooperation with China and Russia.
Recently in a meeting with India’s National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon in Tehran, Ahmadinejad stated “currently, the formation of a new world order is of prime importance and it is upon the independent countries to prevent the same old oppressive order from insinuating itself into a new form”.
The Iranian President’s statements underlined the importance of shared culture as the main ingredient to his vision of the new world order and stated India could be a pivotal force in realizing that dream.
