Germany’s foreign ministry had met with the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council: United States, China, Britain, France, and Russia in Wiesbaden, Germany. Their main topic was in regards to Iran and its nuclear program. US Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice said that US President Barack Obama is open to talks with Iran.
So far, the other nations are on board. Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State, said that she wants direct talks. She said that Iran needs to agree and comply with the mandates of both the UN Security Council and the International Atomic Energy Agency.
However, Iran’s government is not really convinced. So far, Iran demands a “solid offer” from the United States.
Ali Larijani, a parliament speaker for Iran says that a starting point is needed. He said that Iran is ready to talk without pre-conditions. But, he stresses a starting point.
“If the Americans are really willing to resolve the problems, then they must present their concept,” Larijani had said. Overall, Iran’s government is not “bought” on the concept of direct talks with the United States.
Will there be talks between the US and Iran? We will have to wait and find out. One could also ask: What would the US have to offer to further entice Iran?
