Is MySpace a social outlet or growing addiction?

Is MySpace considered fun or a growing addiction? This new trend of socialization has blown up since it’s launching in 2003. Yet it’s kind of taken the direction of becoming rather addictive with some people who spend all day long surfing the site and adding people on their friends lists, and collecting profiles like it’s a shot glass from a souvenir shop. The problems that have erupted on there are the growing number of teenagers and children accessing this site and actually became the breeding ground for possible child predators to find underage victims on there. The security on MySpace is unreal because hackers always seem to find some way to crack passwords and unlawfully access accounts. The one thing that’s come up is the constant need to fix up pages and competing with other users which is clear that you can tell the ones who don’t have a life and who spend all day on there surfing.

Some of the users who do come on MySpace aren’t going to admit how addicting the site is and how they spend all day and night surfing the site. Other issues with MySpace are the constant technical issues that crop up with the level of security in terms of the issue with the hackers and making it so that underage users can’t contact adults on the site and requires parental clearance. It seems like people think MySpace is all that when in fact it’s really not since you only get a page it’s not really a website per say. It seems as if the site is causing people to be signed on all day it’s gotten to the point many public libraries and even school libraries have resorted to firewalling access to the site to free up the computer system bandwith so it’s not causing the system to crash because so many people are accessing MySpace 24 hours a day and basically staying online.

MySpace is a great place to network, but when does it be come an obsession to the point it can take over people’s lives and they don’t do anything else, but surf MySpace. Seems like the trend is to see who’s got the most people on their friend list. It’s slowly starting to come to the realization that it’s just one big competition for who’s got the biggest and baddest pages with the most people on it. It’s kind of funny how people have so many on their friends list and they don’t even talk to a good portion of them. When does socialization go too far when people spend endless time on a website such as MySpace? It’s also becoming more prevalent for minors to be on MySpace contacting adults when parents need to have more control over what their kids are surfing over the internet. Just like that incident where those 5 Texas cheerleaders were using MySpace to post sexually suggestive photos and slanderous blogs about their teachers and one of the girls on the squad and captain of the team, her mother was principal of her high school and as a result of her daughter’s action she quickly resigned. People are abusing MySpace to make inappropriate points about things. What’s becoming noticeable is that people who have pages on MySpace are not coming on as much as they used to since it can get problematic with unwanted people contacting them. This is why the privacy feature is nice because it keeps profile collectors from really contacting you when they can’t see who’s on your list and reading your blog and stealing things off your page.

This maybe a broad topic, but this is worth looking at since it has become somewhat of an addiction for people since the collections of so called ‘friends’ are people you 1. don’t talk to and 2. who are taking up space on your friend list for those who you actually have contact with. The people who come on MySpace are amazing too they’re wasting picture space snapping pictures with their camera phones in the bathroom and this usually are the muscle heads and bimbos doing stuff like this. There’s no point in taking a picture of yourself in the bathroom that’s downright tacky. Plus not to mention some people are using MySpace to look for dates either by surfing pages or contacting someone to ask about a particular person on your page they’re interested in when MySpace is not Match.com or Eharmony.com it’s a social website, but not a dating service. MySpace should be a fun and safe place for people to make friends or even finding old ones, but as long as it’s being readily accessible to the weird and inappropriate people of the world MySpace will just continue being a breeding ground for pedophiles and predators to come to since nobody can find them on the site. MySpace needs to take active measures to verify the ages of their users and create a special section on MySpace to redirect its young under 18 users and then when they turn 18 they’re automatically switched over to the adult side. This is to keep children off the adult side and parents can actually monitor their kids more closely.

Another annoying problem on MySpace besides the underage users is the technical mess they’re having in keeping things fixed on here since people who try to blog, upload pictures, and even adding things to their pages are having a difficult time with submission since the site goes through periods where it’s constantly going haywire and nothing goes through. This is due in part to the excessive people who come on MySpace and stay logged on which can tie up the bandwith to allow others to come on check messages, blog, add stuff to their pages and then sign off. It’s gotten so bad that some days you have to wait hours just to sign on to MySpace because you got those perpetual users who are just living on there instead of coming on doing what they need to do and getting off. It’s about respecting other users so they can come on and use the site as well instead of having to get pages that are saying that the site is busy to come back later. Seriously, some people have no life if they come on MySpace and just live on there doing nothing productive or something that reasonably explains their purpose in having a page on there.

The whole concept of MySpace has also launched other sites as well like Facebook and MyYearbook since these sites are cashing in on the popularity of MySpace and has drawn a significantly even crowd as well by offering things like decorating pages or profiles and giving them the same leeway as MySpace so there’s a choice since in a way MySpace is like the Wal-Mart of socialization and that other sites have to compete for users. MySpace would be a better site even more if they would fix the issues with security so hackers can’t keep infiltrating themselves onto people’s pages pretending to be those they know and to work on keeping underage users off the adult end and create an area just for those under 18 to go to so they won’t be contacting adults or people age inappropriate. If that was done when MySpace was founded we would not have the issues we’re having right now.

There’s a lot of improvements that has to be made to MySpace in terms of security and making sure that kids under 18 stay off the site so that adults shouldn’t have to feel that it’s necessary to for them to set profiles to where only adults can view their page. What is so annoying are the endless photos of people using their camera phones in the bathroom. It would be practical to keep a private archive of pictures you can rummage through and upload to your site to rotate until you get some new ones made. Taking pictures of yourself in the bathroom to post on your page is just plain tacky. I believe in socializing, but when does socialization also become an addiction? It’s then time to know when to get a life.
