Israeli Defense Minister, Ehud Barak, declared that operations in Gaza would continue, despite a growing impatience in the United Nations for a cease fire. It is being reported that over 400 Hamas terrorist have been killed during the Israeli operation into Gaza, codenamed “Cast Lead.” Cast Lead has been going on for eighteen days now and both sides show little signs of caving.
The latest clash between Israel and Hamas is the result of rocket attacks from Gaza and the Golan Heights into Israel civilian areas. Israel simply has no choice but to fight against Hamas and other terrorist factions. The war has actually been going on for a long time and has really only been interrupted by sporadic cease fires brokered by just about every world leader since the “Six Day War.”
Now, we find Israel in a fight for its life from terrorist that not only want the land but also the Israelites out of existence. Many in the US and Israeli defense departments feel that Iran is behind the attacks by providing aid and weapons to the Hamas terrorists. However, recently Hezbollah has joined the fray by firing rockets into Israel from Syria, although, they claim they did not have any part in the attacks that reached deep into Israel’s Northern territory.
Nevertheless, while some may feel sympathy for Israel there are others that have decidedly taken sides with the Palestinian people. The Palestinians are the ones that really suffer because the terrorist regimes are using the people as human shields and are even placing rockets in places like hospitals and schools according to Israeli officials. These feelings of sympathy have been made mainstream when massive protests took place in many of the world’s capitols.
Many people feel that Israel is being a bit heavy handed in their treatment of Gaza. As we watch the news coverage we cannot help but see that Israel definitely has the upper hand when it comes to technological weaponry. However, does this mean that Israel should not use everything at their disposal to protect their people from terrorists groups? No, even in the United States and after 911 the citizens overwhelmingly backed using force to wipe out the terrorists responsible for that day.
No, indeed Israel must defend itself and the terrorists organizations of Hamas and Hezbollah cannot be allowed to win. Nevertheless, Israel does find itself losing the propaganda part of the war and this is due in large part to their not letting outside reporters into Gaza. It appears that Israel is losing the media war.
