The famous temple of Virabhadra, built in the Vijayanagar style, is situated on a low rocky hill which is named Kurmasaila –so called because of its tortoise shape. It is a magnificent example of 16th century Vijayanagar art. An inscription on its wall records that it was constructed by Virupanna and Viranna, who were two brothers in the services of the Vijayanagar king, Krishnadevaraya.
The natyamandapa and (dance hall) and the ardhamandapa (devotional hall) which are the finest parts of the temple, contain some exquisite sculptures of musicians, dancers ad apsaras (angel dance). The kalyanamandapa (marriages hall) unfortunately remains unfinished. The hanging tower supported from above is an object of wonder. A piece of the cloth could be passed under this tower. To the south of the main shrine is a linga (Shiva statue) by a huge Nana. Two hundreds yards east of the temple is a gigantic Nandi (buffalo) carved out of a single stone! It is the largest in India, 20 ft in height and 30 ft in length.
Besides sculptures, Lepakshi is famous for the fine paintings on its walls and ceilings. The sculptures and the painting depict epic and Puranic (ancient) legends.
