On Friday two under trial Italian marines, Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone returned to India to face prosecution as told by an official in the ministry of external affairs.
The diplomatic stalemate created by Italian government on March 11 for not sending back marines undergoing trial here for killing two Indian fishermen to India ended today.The marines posted on security duty yo an oil tanker MV Enrica Lexie opened fire on a fishing boat of the coast of Kerala killing two Indian fishermen Glestine and Ajesh on Feb 15.last year.
Earlier this month, Italy declined to send back the two marines, leading to a political hurricane in India with opposition parties criticizing the government on the issue.
On had Feb 22 the Supreme Court permitted them to leave India to vote in the Italian national elections on the condition that they would return in four weeks to face the trial. On March 11, Italy informed India that the marines would not be sent back. This led to a diplomatic tension thereby Supreme Court issuing restraining order on Italian Ambassador not to leave this country.
