Making over one-hundred and twenty billion dollars a year, it looks as if the Italian Mafia has turned into the biggest business enterprise in the country of Italy. It is said by the leading retailer’s association in Italy that the Mafia’s influence in the south is growing. They explain they are extremely concerned with how their extortion rackets have expanded from small businesses and then infiltrating big businesses.
In a report on allegedly turning a blind eye to the Mafia, some of Italy’s well known construction companies have denounced them. It is explained that the Mafia is present in all areas of the Italian economy. Examples include: finance, tourism, food, service, hospitality, and so forth.
The report adds that it’s easier for the big businesses to negotiate agreements with the Mafia. Interestingly enough, to the big businesses find it more difficult than denounce the extortion rackets to the police. Studies indicate that twenty-percent pay hush money on a regular basis to make sure they can continue business without disturbances. The percentage is higher in southern Italy.
According to Marco Minniti the Deputy Minister of the Interior, he finds that the growth of the Mafia’s influence to be very alarming. So far, it didn’t say if the government was going to take action or not.
