Tata Motors’ ambitious Nano car project, which was forced out of Singur, has found a new home in Gujarat.
According to sources, the Gujarat government has decided to allocate 1050 acres to Tata’s Nano project in the state.
The state government may transfer land to Tata Motors officially on Tuesday.
The company has zeroed in on Charodi in Sanand in the state for its small car plant.
Tata chief Ratan Tata, who is scheduled to arrive in Gujarat on Tuesday, is expected to make a joint statement on the matter with Chief Minister Narendra Modi.(Watch)
A Tata Motors team has already done techno-economic surveys of the new site, which is reportedly located in Sanand, 34 km from Ahmedabad. Rajkot could emerge as the ancillary hub for the Nano project.
The state government has promised the Tatas various tax sops and ready land alongwith connectivity to the national highway.
In addition, the company has been assured that no bandhs or labour unrest will hurt the project.
Playing safe this time, Tata is also looking for more than one site for the plant and is likely to opt for two states.
Interestingly, during a summit in Ahmedabad last year Ratan Tata had said, “If you are not in Gujarat, you are stupid”.
And it now seems that for the last one month, the Modi government has marketed these very words to Tatas. But the man himself is choosing to remain mum.
