Reacting to the reports that the Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir may defer from the scheduled time, the BJP state unit today urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to hold polls on time and not to succumb to the pressure allegedly being exerted by the Congress, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the National Conference (NC).
”We are doubtful that ECI may postpone the assembly polls in the state at the behest of the political parties, which have become unpopular due to their anti-people policies and this is the reason, they are insisting on poll deferment,” Ashok Khajuria, BJP state president said at a press conference here this afternoon.
Mr Khajuria said BJP was opposed to the Governor Rule as it is no substitute to the popular rule adding, ”situation is Jammu and Kashmir is conducive for undertaking the electoral exercise and those trying their level best to defer the polls are scared of facing the electorate.” However, the party chief said the BJP national leadership has cleared told the ECI that polls on scheduled time in J&K was not only in the interest of the people but also in the interest of the nation.
”ECI cannot go by the advise of the separatists and defer the polls,” Mr Khajuria alleged and said the central government should assert its authority and isolate all those who are playing nefarious games in Jammu and Kashmir.
