Chief Post Master General (PMG), John Samuel informed that postal services in J&K had been functioning under great strain in past two decades due to unrest. “Many post offices were temporarily shifted and made functional from other locations”, he said adding that about 29 post offices were relocated and four were closed down temporarily. “Of them sixteen have now been re-established at their original locations. The remaining post offices are likely to be re-established within a year, he added.
Replying to a query, John said that in rural areas post master is still being treated as most important persons as posting letters it is the only medium of communication there. He said that though in urban areas impact of letter posting is to some extent due internet and telephone but in other ventures offered by DPS its share is growing with every passing day.
He said that with the improvement in situation efforts are being made to bring things to right direction soon and in this regard Postal Stamp Exhibition was organized last month in SKICC, which was responded overwhelmingly as more than about 7,000 visitors dropped at the venue every day to participate in activities offered in exhibition.
Rejecting that postmen are running in miserable conditions due to less wages and returns, John said that after the implementation of Pay Commission every postman is getting not less than Rs 20,000 per month salary. He said that Rs 10,000 crores venture of DPS is increasing and expanding with public participation with every passing day.
