Jammu University organizing National Conference on “Resource Potential of Sedimentary Basins”

Jammu, December 21 (Scoop News)   – The Department of Geology, University of Jammu, Jammu is organizing National Conference and XXVII-Convention of Indian Association of Sedimentologists on “Resource Potential of Sedimentary Basins” on December 22-24, 2010. The main focus of the conference is on the resource potential of sedimentary basins particularly hydrocarbon potential, mineral resources, coastal geodynamics, climate change, geoenvironment and conservation of water resources etc.

According to Dr SK Pandita, more than 150 participants including some foreigners are expected to participate in the conference. The research papers have been received from 52 organisations including universities, national institutes, industry and from Russia, Mexico, Oman and Bangladesh. The planned conference at Jammu University will provide a platform to the participants for discussion and interaction on various issues of resource potentials in sedimentary basins of India with emphasis on hydrocarbon potential in off-shore and on-shore basins.

SK Pandita said that the speakers in the conference will include academicians of high repute from various universities, officers of Oil and Natural Gas Corp. Ltd., Geological Survey of India, Central Ground Water Board and scientists from various national institutes and industry. Besides, researchers, academicians, officers of various state organizations and students from University of Jammu will participate in the conference.

 He said the scientists will deliberate upon their research findings in various technical sessions spread over two days. Besides, a large number of poster presentations will be made by the geoscientists and a panel of experts will select five best posters for first, second, third and two consolation awards. A special session is being conducted to discuss the resource potential of the hydrocarbons in relation to tectonic settings of the Himalaya. An exclusive session has been kept for the “Young Sedimentologists Award-2010” to be selected among the four shortlisted participants from different parts of the country. On 24th December a field trip is being organized for outside participants to make them aware about the complex geology of Jammu and Kashmir around the Reasi area.

The students of the department who have excelled in the fields academics, sports and culture will be felicitated during the inauguration of the conference,Pandita said.
