Before she was famous, novelist Jane Austen wrote a parody of British history textbooks at the age of 15. It was not published. Now in the British Library, a digital scan is available online.
She declares herself a "partial, prejudiced and ignorant Historian." Illustrated by her older sister Cassandra, the History Of England could be termed a "revisionist" work championing those English royals usually considered the worst and damning others like Elizabeth I who are usually well-regarded even today. The book resembles those collections of unprepared student essays we enjoy reading.
One of the effects of the digital revolution is that works like Jane Austen’s history that were never published or long out of print can be made easily accessible. Personally, now that I have a scanner to use at work I do not know how I lived without one.
