In Both Apostle Matthew’s and Mark’s Gospel accounting of Our Lord Jesus crucifixion, both apostles quote Our Lord with the following statement as Jesus hangs upon the cross just before his dying.
“E lo i, E lo i, la ma sa bach tha ni, which is being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”
Matthew: 27: 46; and, Mark: 15: 34;
Jesus is crying out to his Father Almighty God and the key word in the question is “Forsaken”. It is a strange word to hear the Son of God speaking to the one he calls his “Father” but there is good reason for Jesus using such a word.
We know that Almighty God detests sin.
We know that Almighty God hates to look upon any of his children when they have sinned.
Knowing this, it stands to reason that while the sins of all mankind from Adam to the current day people and beyond into the future are being heaped upon Jesus as he hangs there, Almighty God because of his intense aversion towards sin, turned his back to Jesus as Jesus hung there. Thus as Jesus looks up to the heavens, Jesus can see Almighty God his Father with God’s back to Jesus or, forsaking Jesus as he hangs there.
In the Apostle John’s Gospel, John makes no such mention of this statement by Jesus, but, John is the only apostle to make reference to Jesus statement at the Last Supper ( LUKE: 22: 18; ) that his lips would not taste wine until such time as Jesus had fulfilled his duties on the cross. John quotes Jesus at JOHN: 19: 30; “When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head and gave up the ghost.”
When Jesus makes this statement, he is not only referring to the fact that he had received the sins of all mankind to make restitution for Adam’s sin, he is also referring to his fulfilling of his promise to Almighty God, telling God the Father that God could now look upon the son and not be disgusted by the sins.
The Apostle Luke is the only one who’s Gospel reports Jesus Last words; “Father, into thy hands, I commend my spirit.” It is that same spirit that Almighty God sends to become a part of every man, the Holy Spirit of the Living God, Jesus Christ.
