New Delhi, November 16(Scoop News)- The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), awarded seven environmentalists and wildlife experts across the country for their dedicated and sustained efforts towards forest and wildlife conservation. Jigmet Takpa (IFS) Chief Conservator Of Forests, Ladakh was conferred the coveted“RBS Earth Hero Award” in ‘Green Warrior’ category at the august RBS Earth Heroes Award 2013 held at the RBS premises at Shastri Park. The RBS ‘Green Warrior’ Award recognizes individuals who have done commendable work in the conservation of Biodiversity, wildlife, natural resource management, environment protection, Enterprise Development.
The jury comprising of experts from the field of conservation, bio-diversity, science, government, media, The Royal Bank of Scotland N.V, National Biodiversity Authority and the Bombay Natural History Society evaluated nominations from across the country, after which the awardees were selected.
Jigmet Takpa has been endeavouring in the field of conservation in Ladakh for over 20 years, implementing a unique ‘landscape level management of biodiversity’ approach to conservation.
At the gathering, Takpa stated the added importance of biodiversity conservation in the Ladakh region as the region lies between the Palearctic and indo-malayan biogeographical realms. He also went on the express that conservation is feasible if it is made economically feasible/attractive to communities. In this regard, works such as the conception and formulation of “Project Snow-Leopard” in line with “Project Tiger” and “Project Elephant”, rural livelihood improvement project such as ecotourism, creation of homestays in Ladakh, training of nature guides, sustainable renewable energy projects, waste-management programmes, research of endangered species and the formulation of management plans that have been undertaken in Ladakh under the direction and leadership of Jigmet Takpa Takpa was recognized at the occasion.
