Speaker, Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Mohammad
Akbar Lone stressed on balanced and mature reporting of assembly proceedings in
forthcoming budget session. He said press has to play a constructive role in dissemination
of proceedings of budget session so that people could know about public issues
raised by their representatives and response of government thereto. Chairing
Press Advisory Committee meeting Lone called upon media to ensure coverage of budget
session with responsibility and professionalism. He said that effective
coverage of assembly proceedings keeps common man abreast with issues
highlighted in highest legislative forum of State and working of Government.
Speaker said that every legislator will be provided ample
opportunity to raise issues of public importance. He hoped that legislatures
would highlight difficulties faced by public in a disciplined manner and in
consonance with high traditions of parliamentary democracy. Speaker said that opposition
is within its rights to pinpoint shortcomings of Government, adding that same
has to be done within parliamentary norms. He sought cooperation of media in
running the budget session successfully, while appreciating its role during last
summer session in Srinagar. He said objective reporting enhances image of the
media in public.
M. Ramzan Secretary called for sticking to decisions taken
in meeting for smooth and efficient coverage of Assembly proceedings. He
suggested nomination of two officers, one each from Assembly Secretariat and
Information Department for liaising between media and Assembly Secretariat to
know about timing of Chief Minister’s address on important issues. Deputy
Speaker, Sartaj Madani was also present on the occasion.
