J&K, DES celebrates first “World Statistics Day”

NSS Srinagar celebrates World Statistics Day

 

           Jammu/Srinagar, October 20 (Scoop News) –The Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DES), in collaboration with National Sample Survey Office under the Union Ministry for Statistics and Programme Implementation, celebrated “World Statistics Day” at Janipur, Jammu here today.

            The function was co-chaired by Director, NSSO, FOD Jammu,  Kishore Kumar and Joint Director I/c Camp Office, Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Dr. Harjeet S. Arora.

            The United Nation general assembly has declared 20th October, 2010 as “World Statistics Day”.

            For the first time, the World Statistics day is being celebrated worldwide, bringing the world’s attention to the importance of statistics.

            The officers and officials of Regional Office, NSSO (FOD), Jammu, SRO, Udhampur and Directorate of Economics and Statistics, participated in the function.

            Speaking on the occasion,  Kishore Kumar asked the field staff engaged in the data collection to provide a reliable, accurate, scientific and comparable data to the planners so that the accurate planning could be made for the development of the country as well as the state.

Dr. H.S. Arora, Joint Director, DES, Jammu stressed better coordination between the central and state government statistical offices for collection of reliable data for development of the state.

     Joint Director, DES, Jammu, s Rajni Charak welcomed the participants and Deputy Director, DES,  Rajiv Bhushan presented vote of thanks.

 

In Srinagar,Kashmir,the regional office of National Sample Survey today held a colorful function here to mark the World Statistics Day.

Speaking on the occasion, the regional Head of National Sample Survey,  Altaf Hussain said that aim of the World Statistics Day is to underline the importance of statistics and highlight the role of the statisticians in planning process at national as well as international level.

  Altaf said meaning and contribution of official statistics is based on the core value of service, integrity and professionalism, adding that the data serves as a very important tool for effective and spatial planning in all sectors which in turn results in the overall development of the country.

Various speakers spoke on the occasion and threw light on the importance of this Day. They said that statistics is an edifice for national development and progress. Stronger edifice guarantees rapid development, observed the speakers.

A large number of officials, intellectuals, media persons were present on the occasion. The prizes and mementoes were distributed amongst the persons, who have excelled in the field of statistics.
