Jammu, December 5 (Scoop News) – Deputy Chief Minister,J&K Tara Chand while calling youth to imbibe sportsman spirit in their lives,said it is not for the players only to inculcate sportsmanship but true spirit of sports is for everybody to follow.
He was speaking at the valedictory function of 2nd North Zone Taekwando Championship, here today.
The three day long Championship was organized by J&K Taekwando Association under the aegis of Taekwando Federation of India.
MLA, Banihal Vikar Rasool, Director General, Youth Services and Sports, S.A. Leharwal, President, J&K Taekwando Association P.C. Sharma, were also present on the occasion.
While lauding performance of J&K in the event, Tara Chand said players of state are second to none in talent and have proven their merit at different competitions in country as well as abroad.
He said the government is committed to promote sports in all three regions of the state and efforts are afoot to upgrade sports infrastructure. Coordinated efforts are needed for the purpose and all those organizations who are working in the field should pool their resources for over all development of the sports, he added.
Describing Taekwando as more than sports, the Deputy Chief Minister said its scope is not limited to championships only but is an excellent tool for self defense also, adding that encouragement needs to be given to the sports both at school and college levels, especially for female students.
The competition was organized in three categories namely, Junior, Senior and Poomsae. Seven states of North zone and two departmental teams of ITBP and CISF participated in the event.
The Jammu& Kashmir state was overall champion in Poomsae category and Delhi runner-up.
In junior category Delhi with nine gold medals was winner and Haryana was runner up with six golds; senior championship was won by Haryana state with Delhi runner-up.
