Four years after her son was brutally killed by the terrorists in J&K, 70-year old Sabza Begum could not resist herself from embracing the police officer, who went against the ‘fatwa’ issued by the terrorists and gave him a decent burial.
AFTER FOUR YEARS of long wait, when seventy-year-old Sabza Begum spotted Deputy Superintendent of Police Sarabjeet Singh during a rally of PDP President Mehbooba Mufti at Poonch, she could not resist herself from giving him a warm hug. In front of a large gathering of around 700 people, when Sabza Begum held the brave policeman close, tears rolled down the cheeks of the old lady.
This was a ‘rare’ scene for the people as nobody shows affection or hugs police officers because of the terror of militants in this part of the country. Whatever happens in this area reaches the eyes and ears of the terrorists.
Singh was the same person, who buried her son four years back, when everybody including she refused to touch him because of the fear of the terrorist backlash. Terrorists killed her son, Sabir Hussain, four years back on the charge that he was a nationalist and was helping the security forces in the area.
Hussian was the resident of village Seri Khwaja in district Poonch of Jammu and Kashmir. After killing him terrorists chopped his body into fourteen pieces and left it in the village and issued a ‘fatwa’ that nobody would perform his last rites.
DSP Sarbjeet Singh, who was posted as a SHO in the area that time dared to challenge the fatwa and by putting his life in danger gave a respectable burial to the badly mutilated body of Hussain. In fact, when Singh asked for a bucket of water from his mother to perform last rites, she refused to give water fearing for the lives of rest of her family members.
Stating that she had been looking for the officer for the last four years, Begum said, "I am grateful that my son got a decent burial and it became possible because of inspector sahib.
When a mother could not perform her duty and the entire village was standing like statues the J&K police officer ensured that a loyal soldier of the nation would be given a decent burial,” Begum added.> While talking to the people, Begum said that her family has been facing severe financial crunch as no one in her family got a job despite her son sacrificed his life for the nation.
“Although the government gave the ex-gratia amount of Rs one lakh but no job was offered to my younger son under SRO-43," said the lady, bent with old age and facing the curse of poverty. Later listening to her woes, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti met her and assured that her case would be taken up at the highest level. The PDP president had gone to Seri Khwaja to hold a public meeting.
