J&K Press Association meets Chief Secretary

Srinagar, May 30 (Scoop News) –Jammu and Kashmir Press Association led by its President, G.H Kaloo Thursday met  Chief Secretary, Mohammad Iqbal Khanday here and presented him a memorandum of demands relating to the welfare of media fraternity.

          Several issues pertaining to enhancement in budget allocations for advertisements, revision of advertisement rates, amendments to the Press Accreditation Rules, accommodation for Press Club (Aiwan-e-Sahafat) at Srinagar, accommodation for houseless media persons, speedy and regular payment of advertisement bills, dispensing with non-budget advertisements, treating newspapers offices as small scale industries etc were discussed during the meeting.

          Describing independence and freedom of press as essential for democratic set up, Chief Secretary reiterated government resolve to address issues confronting the media fraternity. He said budget allocations for publicity and advertisements have been enhanced over the years and have been now placed exclusively at the disposal of Information Department for hassle free release of payments to Newspapers.

          Chief Secretary assured the association that some of the demands highlighted by them are already under the active consideration of the Government and several steps have been taken in this direction.
