Srinagar, October 16 (Scoop News) –J&K Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah today commissioned Receiving Station at Jawahar Nagar which will provide efficient power supply to Jawahar Nagar, Mehjoor Nagar, Kursoo, Padshahi Bagh, Tusli Bagh, Gogji Bagh, Rambagh and adjoining areas benefiting thousands of households.
Minister of State for Housing and Tourism, Nasir Aslam Wani who is also MLA of the area was accompanying the Chief Minister.
Commissioner Secretary, power, Basharat Ahmad Dhar, Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, Mehraj Ahmad Kakroo, Chief Engineer, M&RE, senior officers of other departments including power department were present on the occasion.
The residents of the area accorded rousing reception to the Chief Minister. The new power receiving station has been developed with full modern gadgets and entire HT and LT lines along with other transmission system has been appropriately developed for its automatic operation. The people of the area due to increase of the population and construction of new houses in the area were facing shortage of power during peak hours particularly morning and evening hours. The commissioning of the Station will now be appreciated by one and all.
Equating the importance of power generation with the significance of efficient energy distribution and transmission system, Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah Saturday said that his government was giving due attention for establishing a dependable and modern electricity distribution network in the State.
“We are seeking a central assistance of Rs. 5851 crores for the implementation of a turnaround project submitted by The Energy Resources Institute (TERI), New Delhi for power sector reforms and improvement in distribution and transmission system”, he said adding that a chain of grid stations, receiving stations and sub-stations were already under various stages of completion in the State.
The Chief Minister said that 12 major power projects besides dozens of smaller ones have been initiated to generate about 5,000 MWs of power in the State in next five to six years. “Our efforts are vigorously on to give new dimension to the power generation and its proper distribution”, he said adding that 30 towns in the State including
Omar Abdullah said that there was greater need to improve and upgrade power transmission and distribution system in the State and initiate reforms at various levels to make good of the transmission losses and also keep the system pilferage free.
Chief Minister underlining Power Development as a nerve line in the growth of economy and all round development of the State said that the government was making every effort to harness the hydro energy potential of the State to its optimum. “I have already directed the State Power Development Corporation to fast track the work on various projects being executed in the State by the Corporation jointly with other organizations or constructing these independently”.
Omar said “in the Rural and far flung areas smaller power projects have also been initiated with the assistance of Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy headed by Dr. Farooq Abdullah. The Ministry has extended full support to the State in harnessing non-conventional energy and launching small hydroelectric projects”.
The Commissioner Secretary, Power Development Department, Bashart Ahmad Dhar informed the Chief Minister by the commissioning of Jawahar Nagar Receiving Station as many as, 3500 households would be benefited in 41 mohalls receiving power energy from the same number of sub-stations. It will also provide flexibility to the Department of feeding important installation like hospitals and educational institutions.
