Jose Medellin Execution Tonight for Elizabeth Pena, Jennifer Ertman Murders

Jose Medellin is schedule to be executed in Huntsville, Texas at 11 p.m. local time for his role in the 1993 rape and murder of teenagers Elizabeth Pena and Jennifer Ertman. Some, including the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, are asking the Texas judicial system to review Jose Medellin’s case to see if it violated a 1963 treaty protecting Mexican nationals.

Jose Medellin was born in Mexico but participated in the rape and murder of Elizabeth Pena and Jennifer Ertman in Houston, Texas when he was 18 years old. He was convicted of murder and, like 50 other Mexican nationals in the United States, has been living on death row.

The state of Texas has already executed a man who participated in the double murder of Elizabeth Pena and Jennifer Ertman and two others are serving life sentences in prison. Some say that Jose Medellin is bringing up the 1963 treaty as a last ditch effort to delay his execution. Barring a miracle, Jose Medellin will not be granted a stay of execution and will receive a lethal injection tonight in Huntsville, Texas.
