In Australia, there have been talks of taxing junk food. There have also been talks of banning the sale of junk food to children. While the food and drink manufacturers will oppose the new taxes, one CEO has given forth his support. Instead of opposing taxes on junk food, this CEO is actually supporting them.
This is coming from the mouth of Michael Luscombe, the chief executive of Woolworths. Woolworths is the biggest food retailer in the continent of Australia. Support coming from a big figure such as Luscombe should be considered very big and very major.
Luscombe said that junk food, tobacco, and alcohol should be taxed. He said that he was not speaking out as a CEO. Instead, Luscombe said that he is speaking out as a concerned Australian citizen.
Should the taxes be supported, the money collected would be used to create a health agency in charge of preventive health.
The taxes are part of a national effort to promote and encourage healthier lifestyles. Hypothetically, should the taxes on junk food and other items deemed unhealthy be approved, it could possibly expand a market on healthier food items.
So far, the idea of new taxes is a proposal. While someone like Luscombe supports the taxes, there will be plenty of other CEOs that will oppose it. In the near future, the proposal will come across much heavy opposition.
