The Beijing olympic games are closing in so fast. For sure, many countries are already gearing up to further hone the sports skills of their team members to excel in the tough competitions among the strong contenders this year. And the main goal is to accumulate as much gold medals as they could through sheer hard work in the fields.
Lucky are those countries that can send in as much athletes as they could because they have more than enough support from their own governments and the private sector. Again, the developing countries, which experience a normal budget crunch, have to make do with whatever money they can squeeze from the government coffer and elsewhere just to be able to send some, if not all, of their athletes to Beijing.
In the Philippines, sending athletes to special sports events like the Beijing olympic games would be a hard sell. Just take a cursory look at how many heads will be going to Beijing as part of the country’s sports delegation. If I’m not mistaken, half of the delegation would again consist of sports officials and their wives, with the Philippine government shouldering all the expenses. Instead of sending more athletes to compete for medals, they could not go because the slots were already taken by these officials who always go on a junket.
What a waste of time and money for them to be doing nothing but simply become useless spectators in the gallery. Unless, they would make it a personal trip, the athletes will surely have more bosses and coaches to heed to during the games.
