Two Kamchatka bears attacked a group of geologists in a remote region of eastern Russia, killing two and leaving the others isolated and in need of rescue.
The Kamchatka bears are native to the Kamchatka peninsula in Eastern Russia and are some of the largest bears on earth weighing up to 1,600 pounds. While they normally don’t pose a threat to humans, the bears that killed two scientists are believed to be starving and in desperate need of food due to human’s decimation of the local salmon population, their main food source. Logically but unfortunately, the scientists who were killed stood between the bears and a pool of fish.
While the group of bears that attacked the scientists’ camp is estimated at 30 individuals, the scientists have been authorized to kill approaching Kamchatka bears so they can continue their work.
