I have repeatedly urged Kansas state lawmakers and emergency management officials  to consider an expansion of the evacuation zone around Wolf Creek Nuclear Plant from 10 to 50 miles in the case of an emergency situation.

The 10 mile rule is insufficient, based on statements made by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission recommendation that US citizens stay at least 50 miles away from the nuclear plant in Japan damage by the earthquake and tsunami.

In response the Kansas Department of Emergency Management official said “There is no plan to change the 10 mile rule, based on Mr. Tilford’s recommendations alone.”

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) said the 10 mile zone around US reactors stands.

Officials at Wolf Creek Nuclear Plant admitted that they are aware of my stated concerns, but maintain that they have a “safe operation and have a evacuation plan already in place in case of an emergency that meets all state and federal regulations and requirements. “We see no need to expand the zone which people must evacuate the area in an emergency situation – it is as simple as that”, said a spokesperson for Wolf Creek Nuclear Plant.

I will continue to suggest that everyone within 50 miles of Wolf Creek Plant be prepared to evacuate in an emergency.
