Srinagar,February 16, (Scoop News)-Chairperson, J&K Social Welfare Board, Mrs. Khem Lata Wakhlu Sunday said that youth is the nerve centre and backbone of a society and they deserve a lot of encouragement and appreciation for their role in strengthening bonds of brotherhood and amity among various sections of the society besides fighting for discrimination and injustice.
Mrs. Wakhlu was interacting with a large number of youth at International campaign titled “One Billion Rising” joined by Change Group (Recycling Kashmir) here today.
Emphasizing on the role of youth in catalyzing a positive change in the society by raising their voice against discrimination and injustice, Mrs. Wakhlu encouraged the girl participants by quoting anecdotes from her life when people would taunt and tease girls while going to school. She said with a sea change in the mindset of people, youth need to be emancipated and women empowered, adding that every individual has to do a bit in this direction.
Expressing her satisfaction over the activities being undertaken by the people of high caliber and intellect, Mrs. Wakhlu said that this campaign is active in 207 countries including India.
The event was joined by impressive number of youth who expressed their concern about women’s issues by writing their stories of discrimination and injustice, by sketching on the theme of “violence against women”. Some participants also related their stories of struggle whereas few others compiled and read their poetry dedicated to women. Ahmer Khan, a vocalist also presented his songs in the event.
Various themes were discussed by eminent speakers on violence against women be it female foeticide, domestic violence, dowry, sexual harassment or acid attacks.
The initiative was aimed at raising voice against discrimination and injustices suffered by women in all walks of life and were strongly condemned by the speakers.
