It was KU which persuaded Association of Indian Universities to include it in inter-university sports calendar in 1998,” he said.
The first championship was held in Kerala in 1999 and the second was hosted by the KU in 2000. Out of total five inter-university championships, the KU has organized it thrice, last time in 2007. Since most of the Indian Universities neither have expertise nor infrastructure, the championships in these sports are not regularly conducted.
Pertinently, the KU is the only university in the country, which has its Kayaking and Canoeing centre. The University has 24 modern kayaks and canoes and number of local and imported paddles. With the availability of this equipment Nigeen lake has become a major Kayaking and Canoeing centre.
