Doda/Jammu, March 11 (Scoop News) – Jammu and Kashmir State Resource Centre (J&K SRC) University of Kashmir organized a Symposium on the topic “Female Literacy and Women Empowerment” in Town Hall Doda to create awareness among the people regarding the contribution of women in the development of modern society.
District Development Commissioner, Doda, Farooq Ahmed Khan was the chief guest on the occasion besides Chief Education Officer Doda, Y.R Thussu, Project Director J&K SRC Dr. Manzoor Ahmed, Principal DIET Doda, Ms Payari Devi Zonal Education Officer Doda, Mrs. Shaista Tabassum were also present on the occasion.
10 students drawn from three schools of Doda town participated in the symposium and expressed their valuable thoughts on the topic. Ms. Insha Katoch of Govt. Girls HSS Doda , Ms. Tahira Fatima also of GGHSS Doda , Ms. Himani Kotwal of Green Model HSS Doda , Ms. Safiya Natnoo also of Green Model HSS Doda and Ms. Poonam Kotwal also of Green Model HSS Doda were adjudged 1st , 2nd, 3rd , 4th and 5th respectively.
Earlier, Dr. Manzoor Ahmed Project Director J&K SRC while speaking on the occasion said that J&K State Resource Centre University of Kashmir is a branch of Ministry of Human Resource and Development Government of India which provides logistic support to the state government for effective implementation of Sakhshar Bharat Programme in the entire state. He said that various initiatives and programmes have been started by the Government to uplift the female literacy rate in the country and state as well.
While speaking on the occasion DDC Doda said that according to last census held in 2001, the percentage of female literacy in the country is 54.16%. The literacy rate in the country has increased from 18.33% in 1951 to 65.38% as per 2001 census.
He said that the literacy campaigns have also motivated and encouraged women learners to educate their children, particularly girls by enrolling them in formal schools. An evaluation study of the literacy campaign shows that the biggest achievement of the adult literacy program has been its impact on girls education. The need to provide equal opportunity to both girls and boys has also had effect of generating greater demand for the quantity to both girls and boys has also effect of generating greater demand for the quantity and quality of primary schooling.
He said that Strategies have been adopted by the Government for increasing Female Literacy in the Country. The main strategies adopted by the Government for increasing female literacy in the country include National Literacy Mission for imparting functional literacy, Universalisation for Elementary Education and Non-Formal Education.
The DDC also said that Literacy campaigns have taken up health and hygiene issues as an integral component of adult education programs. Literacy campaigns have helped to spread knowledge about health care and nutrition, thereby enabling mothers to keep their family in better health and to care better for their children. Literacy campaigns have also disseminated information for creating awareness about problems of early marriage, spacing and small family norms also.
