A spokesman of the Police Department has said that seventeen persons including six policemen and 10 CRPF personnel were injured in different incidents of stone pelting in and around Nowhatta, Srinagar today.
He said that out of 10 CRPF personnel, three were seriously injured while one police sub-inspector was also injured. One civilian Suhail Ahmed of Basant Bagh got a rubber palette injury in his foot. Five shops and eight private vehicles also suffered damage because of stone pelting.
Following fresh clashes between security forces and protesters that left 17 people injured curfew like restrictions were re-imposed on Sunday in parts of the old city in Srinagar
Youth in anger shouted pro-freedom and anti-India slogans on the streets in old city areas of Nowhatta, Gojiwara, Rajouri Kadal, Bohri Kadal, Naid Kadal, Fateh Kadal, Khankahi Maulla, Kaw Mohalla, and Rainawari on Sunday morning. They also pelted stones at the police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawans .
Security forces fired tear gas shells and baton-charged initially, but later opened fire to disperse the mob at Khankahi Maulla. As the mob swelled, authorities who had lifted the curfew on Sunday morning from the entire old city, moved in CRPF re-inforcements to control the situation.
But as the clashes intensified, the administration decided to impose curfew-like restrictions in the old city areas falling under the jurisdiction of Nowhatta and Khanyar Police Stations.
Police sources in Srinagar said ten people, including two CRPF troopers, were injured in Sunday’s clashes in the old city.
A report from north Kashmir’s Baramulla town, 55 kms from Srinagar, said protesters clashed with police again on Sunday.
The clashes erupted after Saturday’s arrest of some youths by the police in the town.
