Mukesh Ambani led Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has completed the process of maintenance at its Krishna – Godavari (KG-D6) oil and gas block, located off the eastern coast of Andhra Pradesh, after 12 days of rigorous revamp and upgrade procedures.

RIL undertook a maintenance shutdown on July 31st to carry out repairs and upgrades at a compressor on the Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit operating in the MA oilfield. During the entire process, gas output was shut down completely only for a day, following which the wells remained functional and produced oil at their normal rate. The upgrade process was completed on Tuesday following which KG-D6 block and MA oilfield, including the gigantic Dhirubhai-1 and Dhirubhai-3 (D1 and D3) gas fields, commenced production at near normal levels of about 46 mmscmd of gas per day.

One of RIL’s more productive fields, KG-D6 block has been widely acclaimed for being rather cost-efficient and time driven. The Krishna – Godavari basin block KG-DWN-98/3 (D6) has 19 oil and gas finds. Of these, Dhirubhai -1, Dhirubhai- 3 fields and an oil field MA are currently the largest and entirely functional. KG-D6 produces about 45.4 mmscmd of gas per day and MA oil fields produce around 15,000 barrels of oil per day and about 7.6 million standard cubic meters of natural gas per day from its five wells.

As per the directive suggested by the government, KG-D6’s present output has been contracted to meet the demands of core sectors – 15.35 mmscmd for fertilizer units, 29 mmscmd for power plants, 0.65 mmscmd for city gas distribution firms and 2.59 mmscmd to LPG plants. Oil ministry had noted that production from KG-D6 will first be directed to meet the demands of core sectors, and any surplus following this will be directed to non-core sectors, including petrochemicals, refineries and steel
