Khajuraho has the best specimens of Hindu sculpture -Ajanta

A wave of temple buildings appears to have swept over a large part of Madhya Pradesh between A.D.8th and 12th centuries. Some of the best specimens of these are the temples at Udayapur, Khajhuraho, Gwalior Fort and Gyaraspur. Khajuraho has the best specimens of Hindu sculpture of the 10th and 11th centuries. The emotional expression of lovers portrayed there remains unsurpassed.

Very different from the decorative Hindu architecture is the architecture of the Muslims who ruled in the 14 century. Lacking in ornamentation, it seeks to impress the viewer by its majestic simplicity of form and structure. The best specimens are the Hoshang Shah’s tomb and the Jama Masjid at Mandu.

Subsequently, the building propensities of the Rajput princes found expression in a large number of forts and palaces built by them on hill tops throughout the length and the breadth of Madhya Pradesh.

Murals in famous rock-cut caves at Bagh, along with those at Ajanta, are the only surviving specimens of ancient Indian painti gs. They date back to A.D. 5 th century. In the 15 th century a new school of Raja man Singh. These painting are still to be found on the glazed tiles adorning the facades of the Man Mandir palace at Gwalior. At Mandu, painted enamels are found in the ruins of the monuments erected by the Sultans. Traces of the Rajput school of painting, which reached its zenith in the 17 th century, are to be found in some ruined palaces at Narwar, Sabalgrah, kashipur and Sheopur.
