In pursuance of a decision taken after a series of meetings by BNP and Jamaat, their MPs-elect didn’t take oath on Sunday and said they would join the parliament to make it effective but the date of taking oath will be announced later on.
BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia held a closed door meeting with the party’s senior leaders at her cantonment residence and the meeting continued till midnight but no decision was taken regarding oath-taking of BNP’s MPs-elect. As BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia along with her party MPs-elect were scheduled to take oath in the parliament complex, all preparations were made to make the second day oath-taking a success.
Later yesterday BNP Office Secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi met BNP Secretary General Khandoker Delwar Hossain at his NAM flat residence. After the meeting BNP Secretary General Khandoker Delwar Hossain told The Bangladesh Today, no decision was yet taken regarding oath-taking of BNP’s MPs-elect. "Right now we are unable to say when we will take oath. If our elect-MPs go for taking oath, everybody will be able to see it," Delwar said.
Emerging from the meeting, echoing the same Ruhul Kabir Rizvi told the waiting journalists that BNP Chairperson would take decision about the date of oath taking. "When BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda will inform us about the issue then we will come to know about the exact date of oath-taking by BNP’s MPs-elect, but our MPs-elect are not going to take oath today (Sunday)," Rizvi Ahmed said.
BNP Joint Secretary General Selima Rahman talking to The Bangladesh Today said all out supports and cooperation will be provided to the new government although it has achieved its victory through massive vote rigging and election engineering. "Off course our lawmakers will attend the parliament and they will cooperate with the new government in order to make the parliament functional and on the whole, for the greater interest of the country and its people," she said.
BNP Standing Committee Member Lieutenant General Mahbubur Rahman said, "We have taken decision on principle that we would attend the parliament and cooperate with the government. But a decision is yet to be taken by the party high ups when our MP’s-elect will take oath," Mahbub told this correspondent.
Earlier on Friday some 258 MPs including Sheikh Hasina and Ershad were sworn in as Member of Parliament. Meanwhile, five MPs-elect, including three from Awami League, one from LDP Colonel Oli Ahmed and one from independent were sworn in as the Members of Parliament of the 9th parliament yesterday. Speaker Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar administered the oath at the Oath Room on the ground floor of the Parliament Complex yesterday afternoon.
