The country has been in turmoil in the unrest and pandemonium that had followed directly after the results of the election polls between Mwai Kibaki and Raila Odinga. Mr. Kibaki had said that once the violence ends, he would be prepared to speak towards the opposition. The opposition led by opposition candidate Raila Odinga claim that Mwai Kibaki was wrongly credited with the victory.
Amos Wako, the attorney general for Kenya was called to carry out the independent investigation into the election poll results taken on December 27. Ever since Sunday, over 300 people have been killed with at least 70,000 others displaced as a result of the violence and the claims of a rigged vote.
Mr. Kibaki said: “I am ready to have dialogue with the concerned parties once the nation is calm and the political temperatures are lowered enough for constructive and productive engagement.”
At the same time, he warned that those who continue to violate the law will face the full force of it. It would seem that Mr. Kibaki thinks that the opposition was to blame for the nationwide violence.
“I am deeply disturbed by the senseless violence instigated by some leaders in pursuit of their personal political agenda,” Mr. Kibaki said.
Supporters of the opposition had to postpone their banned mass on Thursday after clashes with police who used tear gas grenades and water cannon. Thousands tried to gather in Uhuru Park but could not due to a massive presence of security.
Supporters of both parties have accused each other of genocide and ethnic cleansing in the unrest after the polls.
