Kim Phuc Phan Thai is known internationally for her feature in the iconic 1972 photo of a naked Vietnamese girl suffering from Napalm burns.
Kim Phuc Phan Thai, also known as Phan Thị Kim Phúc, now 46,spoke today on behalf of burn victims, saying that although 65% of her body was burned, she was able to make a full recovery and lead a rich life.
"I should be dead," she said to a conference in New York City, according to HealthDay.
Kim Phuc Phan Thai endured 17 operations and had to use skin grafts from the 35% of her body that was unharmed. Today she is a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador, public speaker and peace activist.
Despite her recurring pain from nerve damage, Kim Phuc, as she is known to friends, feels blessed.
"The pain I consider as my protection," she said. "It humbles me, and helps me to never take my life for granted. And to share my story."
