MANILA, Philippines – Korea pitched in efforts to help Filipinos recover from the devastation brought by typhoon "Frank," offering $300,000 cash for relief efforts.
A statement on the Korean government’s Web site Korea.net quoted foreign ministry spokesman Moon Tae-young as saying the amount will help the Philippines "recover from huge typhoon [damage]."
"President Lee Myung-bak has already sent a letter expressing his condolences to his Filipino counterpart Gloria Macapagal Arroyo," the Korea.net statement said.
Citing reports, the Korean government noted the death toll from Typhoon Frank (Fengshen) "has risen to 622 with nearly 1,000 people still missing, mostly from the capsizing of a passenger ferry."
"More than 60,000 people have been displaced," it said.
On the other hand, Moon said there have not been any Korean victims reported until now.
Korea said it has provided 10 foreign countries with emergency aid worth a total of $880,000 this year alone.
