Chief District Officer of Sunsari Durga Bhandari warns that as the flood water is spreading everywhere, more villages could be drowned in floods if immediate control measures are not taken.
“If the course of the Koshi River cannot be redirected to its previous condition, the reconstruction of the breached embankments and damaged roads cannot be carried out,” Bhandari added.
People of the district fear more floods due to the danger of more breaches in the nonrepaired Koshi Barrage.
As the level of water has not gone down at all even after opening more gates at the Barrage, more villages are likely to be affected.
Neither the Indian government nor the Nepali government has taken any initiatives to prevent more floods resulting from the Saptakoshi River.
So far, almost 50,000 Nepalis have been displaced due to the breached Koshi Barrage meant to be maintained by India as per the Indo-Nepal treaty signed in 1950.
Nepali political leaderships have already publicly made their position clear that Nepal had long ago handed over to India the responsibility of looking after the barrage.
Nepal’s government and social forces have been continuously carrying out their rescue activities for several days. However, they face difficulties in their work as several villages in Sunsari district still remain inundated.
